OUR HISTORY

Romsey%2520House_edited_edited.jpg

Evan’s Bistro Bar and Garden is located within the historic Romsey House. Rich with history, it was built in 1860 and was originally the Romsey Hotel.  This building was the first of six Hotels in Romsey and held a hotel licence until 1944 when it became a private residence.

The bar area was the original Coach House.  The two rooms behind the Coach House housed the coachmen and itinerant workers who came to work in the potato-growing area between Romsey & Lancefield in late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries. Other cropping and farming also employed large numbers.

Whilst the property lay empty in the 1980’s, it had a brush with fame! A film crew camped in Romsey House and adapted the bar room for the pub scenes in the Australian classic “Dusty”, a film about a dingo-kelpie cross sheep dog.

It was renamed Romsey House in the 1980’s when it was converted into a private residence. Throughout time “Romsey House” has been tearooms, cafes, a restaurant, hairdresser, antiques, and clothes store.

Evan's is now the proud custodian of Romsey House and we hope you enjoy its beauty and history as much we they do.
